The fifth bedroom
At the highest point of the property, shaped around a massive granite boulder and the trees that were already standing there, is the first tiny house ever built in Camps Bay. A bedroom, a bathroom, a desk, and the mountain.
The rock was here first, so the house was drawn around it: the boulder comes through the glass and becomes part of the room, the trees stay where they stood, and the roof is a single concrete slab floating over a box of glass, weathered steel and oak. Inside, the bed sits on a podium facing the panorama window, with Lion's Head in it. A desk with the ocean in front of it, a wardrobe hidden in the oak joinery, and a bathroom of raw concrete and terrazzo with a basin that looks out into the trees. Everything a guest needs, and nothing that is not needed.
Little Rock works as the fifth bedroom of the villa, as a study for whoever has to work, or as the place two of the party disappear to for a night. It has its own entrance at the top of the garden, and its own silence.
